Ovulation question before during or after?

ok iv been reading online that to know if your ovulating you need to keep an eye on cervical mucus, when it is egg white consistency your ovulating. well my question is should you try and conceive before then since it takes x amount of hours for the sperm to make it to the egg? or would you try and conceive as soon as you notice it is the right consistency? i cant seem to find an answer anywhere so i thought i would bring it on yahoo. thanks!
